Applicable to Academic Year: 2008/9 For students commencing this stage of the course in January 09 4. Aspects of course covered by Examination: All rotations and the Population Medicine and Veterinary Public Health Module 5. Form of Examination: Part 1 of the Final BVetMed Examination comprises a Communication Skills workshop, rotations of one or two weeks duration and one module of eight weeks duration. The Communication Skills workshop is ungraded but attendance is mandatory. The module is Population Medicine and Veterinary Public Health (8 weeks) and is assessed by a summative in course assessment at the end of the module. Attendance at the assessment is mandatory. Students are graded on their performance in clinics for each rotation. 6. Requirement to be completed to permit entry to the examination: To have satisfactory attendance according to 91 Policy. To have sufficient attendance at each rotation to enable grading. 7. 7.1 7.2Marking Criteria: Students performance in the module will be graded according to agreed College Criteria Students performance in each rotation is graded under the following headings: Professional Activity Practical Skills Application of Knowledge and Clinical Reasoning Each of these areas is equally weighted in arriving at the grade for the rotation. The rotation grades are 1 2 3 4 Almost certain to achieve the standards required of a new graduate by the time of graduation Likely to achieve the standards required of a new graduate by the time of graduation Possibility that student will not achieve the standards required of a new graduate by the time of graduation Definite concern that student will not achieve the standards required of a new graduate by the time of graduation  8. Allocation of Marks and any additional requirements Overall Grade for Each Rotation:: The allocation of one or more Grades of 4 within a rotation will result in the rotation being failed The allocation of two or more Grades of 3 within a rotation will result in the rotation being failed. In all other cases the overall grade will be that closest to the average of the three grades awarded. 9. Requirements to Pass Overall and Progress to the Next Stage In order to pass the Final BVetMed Part 1 Examination, a student will be required to: have passed each of the rotations individually, and attended the 4th Year Communication Skills workshop, and undertaken the module assessment and achieved a mark of at least 40%, and be able to complete the course within 5 years from the start of year 3. 10. 10.1 10.2 10.2.1 10.2.2 10.2.3 10.3 Consequences of Failure If a student does not attend the Communication Skills Workshop or undertake the module assessment, he or she will continue with the course and retake the module assessment and/or attend the workshop at the next opportunity. (Sitting of Finals will not be delayed for students who then do complete the workshop or attain 40% in the module at the second attempt). If a student fails a rotation s/he is permitted to repeat it once. A student is permitted to repeat up to 3 weeks of rotations without deferring the sitting of Finals provided that time permits. Sitting of Finals will not be delayed for such students who are successful at the second attempt. If a student is required to repeat 4 or more weeks of rotations, the sitting of Finals will be deferred to October (or equivalent later sitting) when he or she will sit finals as a first time candidate. A student who fails any rotation twice or fails to attend the module assessment or the communication skills workshop twice will normally be required to leave the course. S/he has a right of appeal as described in College Regulations  11. Classification A candidate who gains 22 or more rotation-weeks at grade 1 at the first attempt will be awarded Finals Part 1 with Distinction. A candidate who gains 18 or more rotation-weeks at grade 1 at the first attempt will be awarded Finals Part 1 with Merit. 12. Disclosure of Marks Results will be published by candidate number. 13. Absences Where a student has an allowable absence, s/he will be marked absent from the rotation or in course module assessment. Where a student has been absent s/he will be required to repeat and retake the module or rotation at the next scheduled opportunity. It will be counted as a deferred assessment and will not count as one failure for the purposes of 10.2.1 above. An allowable absence is once that results from a significant unforeseeable event such as illness. Any other foreseeable absence will only be considered allowable if agreed by APRICOT and this will only apply in very strictly limited circumstances. A student absent for any other reason will be awarded 0 for the assessment and it will count as a failure for the purposes of 10.2 above. 14. Late submission of work Reports or Project work submitted after the due deadline will be given a mark of 0 (zero). The only exception being if the student has been given an extension by the relevant tutor for an allowable reason.
