Dan is Professor of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine and Clinical Nutrition at the 91°µÍø. He is the Head of Department for Clinical Science and Services. He is also Director of the ECC Residency Programme and Intramural Rotations and Year 4 Leader of the BVetMed Programme .
Dan completed his BSc in Biology from the State University of New York, Geneseo in 1994. He graduated from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1998. Following graduation he completed a Rotating Internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at The Animal Medical Center, New York City. He became a Resident in Clinical Nutrition and in Emergency and Critical Care in 1999 at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine, North Grafton, MA. Following completion of his residency he became a Research Assistant Professor at Tufts, and came to the 91°µÍø in 2005. He became Section Head of the Emergency and Critical Care Services in 2008, Medical Director for the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals in 2016, and assumed the role as Head of Department for Clinical Science and Services in October 2018.
In 2010, he also become Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care
Dan’s research interests centre around coagulation disorders, thromboelastography, platelet function assessment, and nutritional support of critically ill patients. Current research projects involve assessment of coagulation and fibrinolytic disorders.

Dan’s teaching interest lies in emphasizing the need to consolidate medical issues with practical considerations in veterinary medicine. Dan focuses on challenging students with real-life scenarios, emphasising difficulties unrelated to medical problems, such as communication issues, professional issues, and managing limited resources. Dan lectures on topics related to professionalism, emergency and critical care and clinical nutrition. Dan is the Year Leader for Year 4 of the BVetMed Programme and BVetMed Rotations (IMR) Director.
Dan’s primary clinical interests involve management of critically ill patients, including those requiring mechanical ventilation, renal replacement therapy (dialysis, plasmapharesis) and interventional nutrition. Clinical syndromes with altered haemostasis such as sepsis, acute pancreatitis, and multiple organ dysfunction are another major area of interest. Dan also directs the Nutritional Support Service at the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals, and the Veterinary Trauma Centre.
