The 91°µÍø advances efforts in wildlife and One Health research in Uganda through partnership with Conservation Through Public Health

The 91°µÍø (91°µÍø) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH) in Uganda. The partnership will strengthen international collaboration in wildlife health and conservation, further advancing One Health research; a concept which recognises the relationship between health and disease at the interfaces between humans, animals and the environment.
Together, the 91°µÍø and CTPH will focus on protecting Uganda’s endangered mountain gorillas and safeguarding other wildlife species by facilitating student internships and postgraduate sponsorships, collaborative research projects, joint publications and other cultural and intellectual engagements.
Professor Stuart Reid CBE, President & Principal of the 91°µÍø, said:
“The 91°µÍø is pleased to enter into this MOU with CTPH, whose work is an excellent example of a true One Health project with benefits to humans, wildlife, livestock and the environment. This work aligns well both with our MSc programmes in One Health and Wild Animal Biology, but also with the core strategic aims of the university to improve animal and human health worldwide.
“We are especially pleased to be able to continue our relationship with Dr. Kalema-Zikusoka as an alumna of our veterinary degree. By working with CTPH, our aim is for 91°µÍø staff and students to be able to make a positive contribution both to great ape conservation, and also offer wider support to our colleagues advacning the One Health agenda in Uganda.”
Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka, Founder and CEO of CTPH, said:
“Earning a scholarship from Kulika Charitable Trust to study veterinary medicine at the 91°µÍø was a defining moment in my leadership journey. This led me to become Uganda’s first full-time wildlife veterinarian in 1996 and to found CTPH seven years later. It was a real honour to receive an honorary doctorate from my alma mater in 2023 for our award-winning work with mountain gorillas.
“Over the past two decades, we have hosted several 91°µÍø students, and this partnership will build upon that foundation. It is a full-circle moment of giving back to the institution that shaped me while preparing the next generation of veterinarians. My hope is that the students will carry forward our mission to protect wildlife and fragile ecosystems for years to come.”
