Cardiology Residency
This is a three-year training programme that satisfies the requirements for certification by both the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine () and potentially the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine () in the Specialty of Cardiology.
The programme will prepare you for the certifying examination in the specialty of Cardiology of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine as well as providing an introduction to clinical research in veterinary cardiology. You will spend the majority of your time conducting clinical duties in the QMHA as part of the clinical Cardiology Service. This will include seeing referred cardiology cases under the supervision of board-certified cardiologists, managing hospitalised patients and also undertaking weekend duties on a shared rota. The programme will provide experience in catheter-intervention procedures such as balloon valve dilation for pulmonic stenosis and Amplatz PDA closure, as well as in pacemaker implantation. You will also be closely involved in teaching BVetMed students during clinical rotations.
The Cardiology Service comprises of four ECVIM/ACVIM board-certified cardiologists, three Residents, and a Cardiology nurse. The Cardiology Team works closely with other clinical services in the QMHA, including internal medicine specialists, the cardiothoracic surgery team, diagnostic imaging specialists, critical care specialists and clinical pathologists and pathologists, providing a multidisciplinary approach to the patient’s management. As a cardiology resident you will have the opportunity to rotate through other clinical services such as internal medicine, emergency and critical care, and pathology, as well as a two-week externship in human hospitals to observe adult and paediatric cardiology.
Time off clinics will be provided for study, development of a research project and holidays (25 days per year inclusive of bank holidays). The Cardiology service has an active clinical research programme, and you will be expected to participate in research projects, including presentation of your findings at appropriate European or North American conferences, and subsequent publication.
