Dong is a senior lecturer in bioinformatics. His group focuses on big data analysis, where datasets generated from multiple omics platforms and phenotypic and clinical measurements are integrated for system modelling. These approaches are applied to the improvement of animal health and welfare through drug and vaccine development, as well as the comprehensive characterisation of medical and veterinary disease pathologies.

Dong obtained his Biological Science degree from Shandong University in China followed by MSc by research training in the University of Edinburgh. He has then enrolled a PhD program in the School of Veterinary Science, University of Liverpool on infection biology to characterise the proteomics of Toxoplasma gondii.

After completing his PhD, Dong has led and involved in various bioinformatics and wet lab based projects such as developing informatics tools for mass spectrometry data analysis, genome annotation improvements and characterising molecular mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions in several important veterinary and human infectious diseases, ranging from protozoan parasites, bacteria, worms and viruses.

In 2017, he was appointed to a lectureship at the 91°µÍø in the University of London, where he continues his research interests in understanding the molecular mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions using multi-omics approaches coupled to bioinformatics and contributes to the .

Dong's research interests focus on understanding the molecular mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions using high-resolution approaches coupled to bioinformatics. He is interested in 'big data' analysis, where datasets generated from multiple omics platforms are integrated for system modelling.

Trained as an experimental biologist with hands-on mass spectrometer and bioinformatics skills, his work also contributes to the understanding of proteoforms, where splice variants and post translational modifications are experimentally and bioinformatically characterised followed by functional validations. The data generated also contribute to the next round of genome annotation as solid evidence of expression to improve gene model predictions.

  • Identification of novel druggable targets in canine insulinoma through single-cell transcriptomic analysis

Insulinomas in dogs are difficult to cure by surgery. We investigate which genes are crucial for survival of insulinoma cells, allowing us to design new treatments targeted at these genes. Insulinomas are the most common pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours in dogs and humans. Current treatment options are limited to surgery and palliative medical therapy. Survival is poor with a median of 4 [range 0-18] months and 14 [range 0-51] months for medically and surgically treated dogs, respectively. Hence, new, more precise treatments are needed to improve the clinical outcome for dogs and humans with malignant insulinomas.

  • Machine learning algorithms for predicting drug resistance against tuberculosis in people

Tuberculosis disease (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, is an important global public health issue, and its drug resistance, caused by genetic mutations in the M. tuberculosis genome, poses serious challenges for effective control. Current molecular diagnostic tests are imperfect as they do not target all resistance mechanisms and drugs, nor do they inform on transmission clusters, and are therefore unable to guide completely effective individualised therapy.

  • SweetAnimals

The SweetAnimal project studies the presence of sugar-binding receptors in the genomes of a variety of farmed animals, how these differ between species, what ligands expressed on pathogens they bind, and how this information can be used to develop carbohydrate-based vaccines.
