Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is an acute infectious disease of small ruminants that has been targeted for global eradication by 2030, principally by mass vaccination of small ruminant populations in PPR-endemic regions.

These diverse small ruminant populations can have highly heterogenous mixing patterns which influence the transmission dynamics of PPR and the impact of vaccination strategies. Using a mathematical transmission dynamics model, this paper shows that global eradication of PPR may not be achieved under random or convenience vaccination strategies and that the virus will likely persist if vaccination is biased towards accessible, low-risk, ruminant populations. It is thus recommended that PPR eradication policy should move towards risk-based, targeted vaccination of high-risk small ruminant populations.
